Sentimental Photographer Problems

A lot of you have probably seen this thing going around the internet lately - the list a husband made about why his wife is crying. My husband and I also saw it and had a good chuckle about it, because I also cry at the drop of a hat.

The hilarious list struck me as the perfect opportunity to address something very important. Here it is. I am probably going to cry at your wedding. There - I admitted it. I mean obviously I won't cause a scene with audible weeping or become incapacitated by the swelling tide of my emotions. I promise you won't even notice it.  But the thing is I adore people, love, and weddings. They are beautiful, happy, and just generally emotional. And I love my clients. I get a little choked up at pretty much every wedding I photograph.  I should add "weeping discreetly" and "taking pretty photos through a misty veil of tears" to my resume under special skills.

So without further ado, I present to you:

Reasons Why I'm Crying At Your Wedding

1. Your dog is wearing a bow tie and/or other canine formalwear. That is way too cute for a person like me to handle.
Picture
2. There are photos of your cat there. And I know how much you want her to be there with you on this day but she hates new places. And now I am thinking about how much you miss your cat and how much I miss my cats.
Picture
3. The ring-bearer and the flower girl are adorable.  Ok - so really anything with children or animals = me probably crying.
Picture
4. I am thinking about your hypothetical future great- grandchildren finding a box full of your wedding photos and looking through them.
Picture
5. The trees at your wedding venue are tall and majestic.
Picture
6. Either you or one of your wedding guests is also crying.

7. The readings, songs, or vows are beautiful. Bonus crying if one of you sings to or with your new spouse.

8. The light is perfect. It's perfect and we have to run towards it and frolic in it.
Picture

9. You two are just so in love and happy, and everyone is so happy for you. Everything is so beautiful, and it is too much for my little heart to handle all at once.

Natasha and John were married in an outdoor ceremony on the most gorgeous day in late May. The weather was perfect, Natasha was beautiful, John was dapper, and their two daughters were adorable. They also threw one heck of a dance party later in the evening.

Natasha and John - thank you for allowing me to document your love.

Christie & Brian: Engaged

Christie + Brian = AWESOME. Forreal. These two are amazing. They have great style and are both really fun to be around. They even agreed to wake up super early with me to gallivant around Boston for a few hours for their engagement session. While the weather didn't cooperate and give us the sunrise we were hoping for, Boston was softly lit, blooming with spring flowers, and...completely empty! We practically had the entire city to ourselves.  We wandered around the public gardens and Beacon Hill drinking coffee and talking about dogs, our mutual fondness for scary movies, and beautiful wedding plans.

It was such a treat to see the beautiful connection Brian and Christie have. They obviously love being together and laughing with each other. Congratulations, Brian and Christie! I absolutely cannot wait to see you both again at your wedding this August!

Meghan & Ollie

Meghan and Ollie are awesome. They both have great senses of humor, and you only have to be around them for a few minutes before realizing how much they enjoy being around each other and making each other laugh. They have been married for a few years, and I felt privileged to be able to document their love this past March.

We took advantage of the spectacular winter weather (we had plenty of it, after all) and drove up to New Hampshire to visit the Ice Castle. Then we took to short trip to Franconia Notch State Park for some snowy forest pictures. Along the way we talked about music (did I mention these two are also talented musicians?), exchanged stories about our cats, waded through knee-deep snow, fell into knee-deep snow, lost feeling in our toes, and generally had a lot of fun. Here are a few of my favorites!

A Little Manifesto

4/7/2015

A few months ago I filled out a job application (more on that in the coming weeks) and one of the things I had to address was why I loved photography. I thought and drafted and edited and redrafted, and then I finally just said what was really true and sent off the application.  And then it occurred to me that I should probably share it with all of you.  So here it is.  I am sure there are people who have written with far more eloquence and originality on the subject, but this is what I feel.

Why do I love photography? I could probably write a book about that, but the short answer is this: I love photography because I love life and I love people.  Don't get me wrong - I geek out over gorgeous light and beautiful decorations and scenery as much as the next person, but it's the people and the small moments that are the heart of why I love this.  Although I am friendly and outgoing, I often find it difficult to be open about my own emotions. I have a hard time expressing to people how I truly feel about them and life in words.  Photography lets me tell them.  I can tell them that I see their joy as they twirl around holding their baby at the beach, that I see how my parents still look at each other after 30 years of marriage, or the meaning in the simple, tender gesture of putting their hand on a loved one's arm, or how their nose crinkles a little when they laugh, or their absolute elation after being announced married. I see all these things and I think they are so, so beautiful.

As always, thank you for allowing me into your lives to tell you and the world just how wonderful I think you are.

Costa Rica

My family and I went on a lovely vacation to Costa Rica in January.  We stayed at a beautiful house in a sleepy little town right on the coast, spent entirely too much time just sitting at the beach, ate ceviche, released baby turtles into the ocean, went hiking, and lots of other things.  It was wonderful.  Here are a few of my favorite photos from the trip.

Bohemian Styled Bridal Portraits

3/1/2015

When Carolina approached me about doing some styled bridal portraits, we both knew that we wanted them to be anything but traditional.  Carolina has a bold, vibrant personality, and her portraits needed to match that!  We eventually decided to take our inspiration from nature and two of New England's prettiest seasons - autumn and winter.  For the part inspired by autumn, she chose a gorgeous unconventional dress in a deep burgundy, a wheat bouquet, a crown of gold leaves, and even a black veil!  The winter part was soft and ethereal - with a crown made of evergreens, yards and yards of soft tulle, and a romantic gown.

Styled Bridal Portraits

Yesterday I posted Part 1 of a styled portrait session with the lovely Carolina.  The first part of this session was inspired by the transition from Autumn into Winter, and it was a little darker with lots of deep berry and gold colors.  For the second part of the session we decided to do some styled bridals inspired by very early Spring. I continued my tottering around on a broken foot indoors and Carolina continued rocking it. Here are some of my favorites.

New England Portrait Photographer: Styled Portraits

2/3/2015

Carolina is super sweet and fun.  I have known her for just over a year now, and we talked about doing some styled portraits for months before it actually happened.  On our first scheduled attempt the weather did not cooperate with us, and on the day of the second try I fell and broke my foot!  But finally we made it happen, and boy and I glad we did (even if it meant me hobbling through the forest on a cast and generally looking very foolish).  The first part of the shoot is inspired by that fleeting week or so when autumn is transitioning into winter.  Enjoy!  And check back tomorrow for Part 2.

New Year's Eve Cocktail Recipes

1/4/2015

Picture
This New Year's Eve, Brent and I rented a cabin with our good friends Matt and Courtney, who just so happen to be the beverage wizards behind Source Coffeehouse in Bridgeport, CT.  If you live in the area, stop by and try some coffee because it is seriously delicious.  And while we drank plenty of coffee during our stay, we also threw a pretty fun party (more pics from that to come!) and we wanted something just a little stronger to celebrate.  We decided to make some herb-infused cocktails for the occasion, and boy were they tasty and easy!  In fact, they were so tasty and easy that we decided we needed to share them with all of you!

It all starts with some herbs of your choice, sugar, and water.  We used a combination of lavender, rosemary, peppercorn sage, and thyme, but you could do this with any of your favorite flavors.
Picture
Combine 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan.
Picture
Simmer the sugar and water until a syrup forms and then add your other ingredients.
Picture
Picture
Let the mixtures steep for 30-45 minutes.
Picture

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Strain out the herbs and let the syrup cool before using in your favorite recipe.  If you're feeling extra fancy (we were) garnish them with a sprig for presentation.
Picture
And voila! Simple syrups ready to go!

Simple Syrup

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water

Put water and sugar in a small saucepan and heat over medium-low burner, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves completely and forms a syrup.  From this stage, try any of the variations below:

Rosemary - Add 2 sprigs of rosemary to the pot and simmer for an additional 2 minutes.  Remove from heat and let steep for 30-45 minutes before straining out rosemary.

Lavender - Remove syrup from heat and add 3 sprigs of lavender.  Let steep for 30-45 minutes before straining.

Thyme - Remove syrup from heat and add 3-4 sprigs thyme.  Let steep for 30-45 minutes before straining.

Peppercorn Sage - Add 2 Tbsp. whole peppercorns to syrup mixture and simmer for 2 minutes.  Remove from heat and add 1/4 cup fresh sage leaves.  Let steep for 30-45 minutes before straining.

Let strained syrup cool completely before using.  To store, store in tightly sealed glass jars in the refrigerator and it will keep well for several days.

And just for good measure, here are a few cocktail recipes you can try! Each recipe makes 1 drink.

Thyme Blood Orange Cocktail

1/4 cup freshly squeezed blood orange juice
2-3 Tbsp. thyme syrup, to taste
1/4 cup bourbon
Few dashes of your favorite bitters
Seltzer Water

Combine bourbon, thyme syrup, juice, and bitters in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake vigorously and strain into a cocktail glass.  Add some ice, top with seltzer, and enjoy!

Rosemary Gin Fizz

1/4 cup gin
2-4 Tbsp. rosemary syrup, to taste
1 Tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 sprig fresh rosemary
Champagne

Put gin, syrup, half of the rosemary sprig, and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker and muddle together briefly.  Add ice and shake vigorously.  Strain into a champagne flute or cocktail glass and top with champagne.  Garnish with the other half of the rosemary sprig and a slice of lemon if you like. For a lighter cocktail, try using seltzer water instead of champagne.

Drink up, my friends!  And feel free to invite me over anytime you are making these...

xoxo
